Welp. He did it again. Trump opened his big, fat mouth, and whoops, something hugely sexist just fell right out. Right out there on national television.
If this were Boobergate, he’d be blurred out. But alas, this isn’t the offense of a she-nipple, it’s a male mouth hole and we definitely don’t censor that.
This time, the peek-a-boo involved a look into his stance on abortion. After clarifying his position that abortion should be banned, outright, he said that women should be punished for having ‘illegal’ abortions.
It isn’t clear whether said punishment should involve flogging, water-boarding, or a big, red A tattooed across one’s chest. “I have not determined what that punishment would be,” he said.
Obviously, people immediately lost their damn minds.
Which is a completely reasonable thing to do when a candidate for president basically announces his plan to enact Shariah law on the women of his country, if elected.
Trump is like that OB you can’t decide whether to thank or punch in the face for telling you the truth about his expectation that you just do what you’re told and shut the hell up about options.
I mean, on the one hand, it’s great to have advance notice – thanks for the heads up, bruh, see you never again! On the other hand, it’s, …. ‘what the actual fuck did you just say?’
And the kicker is that while his off-the-cuff proposal to give women the Hester Prynn treatment is most definitely disturbing, it isn’t even remotely unimaginable.
Even outside of a Trump presidency, women are already serving criminal sentences in the U.S. for abortions and miscarriages. Provisions intended to protect women from abusive partners are being turned on pregnant women, themselves, in a new phenomenon that criminalizes pregnancy.
Women are literally sitting in jail cells for the crime of feticide as I write this.
Here’s what that means. Women who don’t otherwise have a safe and legal option to access abortion – i.e they can’t afford abortion in a clinic because they’re poor, or TRAP laws have closed all but a few clinics in their state, or they have no support and they can’t fathom walking past the protestors outside of the clinic chanting that they’re a god-damned murderer – are taking matters into their own hands. And aside from placing their own lives at risk, they’re being charged, criminally, for it.
You know, because safety.
Safety is the mantra for the conservative right seeking to limit women’s access to abortion. I mean, those sweet lads, they just want to be sure that if in the half percent chance we need to be wheeled to an ER following one of the safest medical procedures ever – the hallways are wide enough and the abortion doctor has admitting privileges. And shouldn’t women be safe when getting an abortion?
And, when women are not being safe, well, they should go to fucking jail.
Let’s just get real.
Trump saying women should be punished for abortion isn’t some brand new weird extremism of the far-right Republican party. Trump’s overt statement is merely placing a placard with the truth over the hundreds upon hundreds of regulations restricting access to abortion and attempts to ban it, outright. And that placard reads, “SHAME ON YOU.”
